Doha, January 14 (QNA) – Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Orthopedics Department has successfully introduced total ankle replacement surgery for the first time in Qatar. In December last year, three Qatari patients underwent total ankle replacement surgery.
Dr. Mohammad Al Ateeq, Senior Consultant and Head of Orthopedic Surgery at HMC and Director of the Bone and Joint Center, highlighted that the center is one of the first specialized facilities in the Middle East to perform this advanced surgery. This achievement is made possible by the introduction of state-of-the-art surgical and treatment techniques and the continued development of medical expertise to enhance patient outcomes, improve quality of care and promote faster recovery.
Total ankle replacement involves replacing the damaged joint with an artificial joint. This surgery is an innovative option for patients who have sustained severe joint injuries and want to maintain normal ankle movement. This surgery preserves ankle mobility, allowing patients to move the joint naturally and reducing pain associated with injury or infection.
Dr Mohammad Majid Mukaimal, senior consultant in orthopedics at HMC, said ankle replacement surgery significantly improves the quality of life of patients. The flexibility of the artificial joint allows patients to easily resume their daily activities. “This surgery is ideal for people who want to maintain flexibility of movement and have low to moderate needs for physical activity,” he explained.
Dr. Mukaimah added that ankle replacement surgery involves removing the damaged part of the joint and replacing it with a prosthetic component made of titanium and hard plastic. These materials increase flexibility and reduce the risk of infection in the surrounding joints. Recovery typically takes 6 to 12 months and includes physical therapy to increase mobility.
Ankle problems are one of the most difficult conditions that affect a patient’s quality of life. When a joint infection or severe trauma progresses, doctors often recommend ankle replacement or arthrodesis as a treatment option.
Dr Jassim Al Saii, Associate Consultant Orthopedics at HMC, explained that ankle fusion surgery was once considered the only solution to joint friction. This surgery removes the damaged cartilage and then fixes the bones of the joint with nails or metal plates to alleviate pain caused by friction. However, because this surgery results in a permanent loss of joint mobility, it is usually only done when the joint is severely deformed or unstable. Additionally, pressure on surrounding joints increases, which can lead to future joint infections.
Dr. Al Sayi added that both ankle replacement and fusion surgery are effective solutions to reduce pain and restore quality of life. The choice between the two surgeries depends on the patient’s needs, lifestyle, and joint condition. Recovery from either surgery requires consistent physical therapy and avoidance of strenuous activity. Regular follow-up is also essential to monitor recovery and assess joint function. (QNA)
