As preparations continue for the 2025 MLS season, one of the teams making waves is San Diego FC. The league’s newest franchise has Mexican star Irving Lozano leading the way on the field. As the season opener approaches, Lozano has high expectations for his team and fans.
Lozano left a legacy at every club he played for, winning trophies with Pachuca, PSV Eindhoven and Napoli, and is famous for helping them win their first Serie A title in 30 years. Now with San Diego FC, Lozano is ready to lead the team to fame. At MLS Media Day, the forward revealed his ambitions.
“It’s very important and special to leave my mark on a club that I’ve played for. I’m coming with all the energy and the right attitude to make San Diego an important team in MLS. I want to win the title, that’s my goal. It’s very difficult, but it’s possible. That’s why we have to work hard to achieve it,” the Mexican star told the media.
Although it’s San Diego’s debut season, Lozano remains confident in the team’s potential. “My goal is to get to the play-offs. It may sound arrogant, but I want to be champions. It’s a new club with new teammates and new players, so it’s going to be very difficult, but we You will have to work very hard.”
Lozano first traveled to Europe in 2017, joining Dutch side PSV Eindhoven from Pachuca for a transfer fee worth around $20 million. When will San Diego FC’s 2025 MLS season start?
San Diego FC will make its MLS debut on Sunday, February 23rd against the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park. The home opener at Snapdragon Stadium is scheduled for Saturday, March 1st against St. Louis City SC.
New to the league, San Diego FC increases the number of teams in MLS to 30 teams. In the 2025 season, each team will play 34 regular season games (17 at home and 17 on the road). 28 of those games will be against conference opponents (home and away format), and the remaining six games will be cross-conference matchups (three home games, three away games).
