Manchester United are targeting a move for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Gonzalo Inacio this month.
Portuguese outlet A Bola (via Sports Witness) reported that United are preparing a loan offer for Inácio in the summer, with an obligation to buy him for 40 million euros.
The defender’s release clause is set at 60 million euros, but it is reported that Sporting could accept a deal for 40 million euros given his financial situation.
The 23-year-old Portugal international has reportedly attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund, who have contacted Inacio’s agent Miguel Pinho to explore a possible move.
Pinho, who is also Bruno Fernandes’ agent, reportedly traveled to England this week to hold talks with United representatives, drawing on his strong ties with the club.
United have been tracking the centre-back for some time and recent developments suggest they could make a decisive move in January.
Ruben Amorim knows Sporting’s players well. His close relationship with Inacio could influence the player’s final decision.
Since returning from injury last year, Lisandro Martinez has struggled to regain his defensive solidity.
Inácio could be a similar addition, with similar attributes to Martinez, including being left-footed, a valuable trait in modern defensive systems.
Depth and quality are essential in Amorim’s preferred three-centre-back formation, with at least five reliable centre-backs needed to manage the rotation in multiple competitions.
Despite his recent challenges, Martinez remains a key asset with a lot to offer. His versatility allows him to take on alternative roles and provides flexibility within the team.
Inácio’s arrival will not only strengthen the defensive core, but also integrate players familiar with Amorim’s tactical principles, ensuring a smoother adaptation to the manager’s demands.
