Copernicus: 2024 will be the first year in which temperatures exceed pre-industrial levels
Brussels, January 10 (QNA) – Scientists from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Agency have confirmed that global average temperatures in 2024 will exceed the threshold of 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels for the first time.
Scientists noted that this temperature increase reflects the unprecedented effects of climate change in modern times.
According to Copernicus, temperatures in 2024 will be 1.6 degrees warmer than during the period 1850 to 1900, when carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels began to rise.
Carlo Buontempo, director of Copernicus, stressed the importance of urgent action to reduce emissions, saying they are not over yet. And that they have the power to change their course now.
Meanwhile, the Met Office, the UK’s Met Office, reported that temperatures will exceed 1.5°C in 2024, but estimated the annual rise was slightly lower at 1.53°C.
Notably, under the 2015 Paris Agreement, governments have committed to efforts to prevent global average temperatures from exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius to avoid more severe and costly climate disasters. . (QNA)
