David Moyes is on the verge of being appointed Everton manager for the second time after agreeing to replace Sean Dyche in the Goodison Park dugout.
The 61-year-old left West Ham United last summer after a hugely successful spell in charge at the London Stadium, ending the Hammers’ 43-year trophy wait.
Moyes was Everton manager from 2002 to 2013 and was named LMA Manager of the Year three times. He left the club to join Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor, but was sacked after just nine months into a six-year contract at Old Trafford.
According to a report in The Athletic, Everton’s new owners, Friedkin Group (TFG), immediately appointed Moyes after deciding to let Dyche go just hours before the FA Cup third round win over Peterborough. It is said to have been the number one target.
He is expected to sign a two-and-a-half year contract soon – Sky Sports says an agreement has been reached between the parties – and TFG wants Moyes to “lay the foundations” for the club ahead of the move. Vauxhall’s new 52,888 stadium, located at Bramley Moor Dock, is believed to be in the area.
Moyes’ first job will be to help Everton avoid relegation. With the Toffees in 16th place, just one point above the drop zone and two points out of the available top 15, the Scots will need to quickly improve on their dismal performance in front of goal.
In fact, Everton have scored just 15 goals this season, with only bottom club Southampton having a worse record, winning just three of the 19 games they have played.
