According to media reports, the army chief was declared president after two votes in Congress, effectively retiring from his previous post.

“A prime minister must be appointed and a government formed without delay. The challenges that the Lebanese state now has to deal with are too huge to waste any more time on,” she stressed.
“Now is the time for all decision-makers to put Lebanon’s interests above personal or political considerations.”

He said the election of the president brings new hope and commitment to strengthening the cessation of hostilities and maintaining security and stability in the country, including strengthening state authority and promoting comprehensive and sustainable reforms across Lebanon. He pointed out that it offers an opportunity to pave the way forward.
He said the United Nations looked forward to working with President Aoun and relevant authorities to support Lebanon as it takes meaningful and measurable steps in this direction.
