Manchester United still prioritize signing a new left-sided defender in January to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s backline this transfer window, Fabrizio Romano tells GIVEMESPORT exclusively. Ta.
The Red Devils are yet to make any moves in the winter market but remain keen to sign a new left wing-back in Amorim as they aim to eventually replace Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malasia.
The defensive duo have struggled with injuries recently and have barely featured under Amorim this season, with Shaw making just three substitute appearances before suffering another worrying injury.
However, Romano says pursuing a deal for a new defender remains difficult given United’s strict Financial Fair Play situation. This could lead the Red Devils to explore creative solutions, such as a swap deal.
Amorim still wants new defender
Will replace Shaw and Malasia in January
Speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT, Romano revealed that United have identified the left wing-back position as “important” to strengthen during the January transfer window.
“I think the key position they look to cover if they find space to do something is left wing-back, which is what they wanted to do.
“I know Malasia and Luke Shaw have had a lot of problems recently, so Man United want to do something in that position.
“But again, it’s going to be based on financial fair play, or creative opportunities like swap deals and these kinds of ideas.”
United’s winter business could soon be boosted by multiple departures, including Casemiro, who is currently thought to be a specific target for the Saudi Professional League club.
The Brazilian’s departure could free up a huge wage bill at Old Trafford and pave the way for a new signing on the left, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes being mooted.
The Red Devils also expect Marcus Rashford to leave on loan in January, with leading European sides AC Milan, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund interested in signing the 27-year-old on a temporary deal. It shows.
United are 13th in the Premier League after 20 games and will next face Arsenal in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.
