SA’s Motsepe Foundation Championship set to resume

One of the most competitive leagues in South African football, the Motsepe Foundation Championship begins this weekend after being suspended since December 15, 2024.

After a four-week break, South African First Division teams will begin the second half of the 2024/25 season from Friday to Sunday.

Leaders Durban City enter the December break with a 2-1 win over Milford, with 28 points from 14 games.

But now the club formerly known as Maritzburg United will take on the Hungry Lions at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday night. The Hungry Lions will be keen to pick up a win this month after recording a 1-1 draw against Upington City last time out.

Second-placed JDR Stars are scheduled to take on Baroka FC at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium on Saturday afternoon and will be hoping to keep up with the pace set by leaders Durban City. JDR Stars ended in a 0-0 draw with Orbit College in their last match before the adjournment, but Baroka faced Black Leopards at Global Stadium on December 13 with a morale-boosting 4-2 win. Ta.

At the moment, JDR Stars are two points off the top of the table, but Baroka are trailing Durban City by six points after round 14.

And at the other end of the table, 15th-placed Lerma United will chase Orbit College for promotion at the Lucas Masterpiece Moripe Stadium on Saturday. With just 10 points after 14 games, Lerma United will head into their next league game on the back of three consecutive defeats.
