Joe Cole still has many good friends within Chelsea and is still very involved with the club.
So it’s always interesting when he talks like this. Cole was full of praise for the England international, saying Chelsea had prioritized defense this season and had co-signed Marc Guehi.
But he couldn’t resist throwing in a cheeky little jab at Chelsea along the way!
“Chelsea’s priority is central defense,” Cole said, as quoted by DAZN. “Benoît Badiashile is injured, Wesley Fofana has been great but continues to be injured. Levi Colwill is a young player who has done well but still needs to grow and improve and he would do so.
“It’s very frustrating for Chelsea because they released a player like Marc Guehi and he became what I saw as a top centre-half (at the time).”
“Guehi is a suitable player and is currently in England’s starting XI and Chelsea will have to fork out to get him back. That is an area that needs to be resolved at Chelsea.
“Some players, like Axel Disasi, are not as established as the club would have liked. We like our relationship with Marc Guech, but we have to go buy the players we sold. It’s just frustrating – Chelsea does it too often!
“If there’s a need and it’s the right move, you have to do it. I don’t think there’s a better centre-half in this country outside of Manchester City and Arsenal. He’s as good as any player. He’ll get better. ”
Cole was a big compliment, and also made a good point about the need to get academy players back on contract.
I like Guehi. I think he’s a very solid defender, very calm, has leadership and is very good on the ball and on defense. I’m not against signing him. I don’t think he checks all the boxes we need. I ideally want a centre-back who is imposing (both in the air and on the ground), aggressive, organized, loud, dominant and attacking. And I really think that’s what we’re missing in this area. As I said earlier this week, he’s not my first choice, and probably not my second or third choice.
But I admire what Cole said here, and he’s not entirely wrong about Guehi either. Top, top player.
