The latest Betway Premiership matches played this week featured teams like Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, with Buccaneers losing to Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs taking on Stellenbosch FC. Earned maximum points.
Orlando Pirates opened the season in their home city with a 1-0 defeat against Cape Town City in their most recent league match at the DHL Stadium on Tuesday night.
Fresh off their win against Kaizer Chiefs, City fought to fend off a well-coached Bucs side keen to pick up maximum points and leave Mother City. But Darwin Gonzalez had other plans when the Venezuelan star scored the only goal of the game in the 74th minute.
Most disappointingly for Pirates, they struggled to get into the game after that when Patrick Maswangany missed a penalty and then Gonzalez took the lead.
In other matches, Kaizer Chiefs fought for their first point of the year after recording a 2-1 win against Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium.
Moans and groans echoed through the Calabash after Homocho Lekolane gave Stellenbosch the lead in the 20th minute. However, the Glamor Boys stepped up a gear and equalized just eight minutes later with a timely goal from Wandile Duba.
Duba put his team ahead in the 57th minute, beating the offside trap on his way to goal and slotting the ball from an angle inside the Stellenbosch 18-yard area.
The win lifted Kaizer Chiefs to fifth place, while Stellenbosch dropped to seventh.
