When I talk to people around the world, I often hear that we are losing touch with our parents. Even academics have emphasized this concern.
The gap between children and their parents is becoming increasingly serious and has become a problem that cannot be ignored.
We are all busy with work, responsibilities, and personal demands that are constantly pulling us in different directions.
But questions remain. What could be more important than our parents?
In Islam, caring for them is not just a responsibility. It is a commandment from Allah (SWT). However, this sacred duty seems to be disappearing in modern times.
The blessings of caring for parents
I have been caring for my grandparents, who are like my parents, since I was 10 years old. They have shaped me into the person I am today. Even now that my grandmother is in her late 80s, I continue to care for her.
Alhamdulillah, I have seen countless blessings that come from this responsibility.
Yes, it’s difficult. Yes, I had to sacrifice my youth, career, and many personal pursuits. But every hardship is worth it.
I always remember the hadith. Muawiya ibn Jahima reported: Jahima came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said:
“O Messenger of Allah, I am going on a military expedition and seek your advice.” The Prophet said, “Do you have a mother?” He said. The Prophet said, “Stay close to her, for paradise is at her feet.”
This gives me the strength to continue serving my grandmother even as she grows older.
personal reflection
We understand that not everyone has the same experience. But I really don’t understand why so many people have a hard time understanding the importance of this divine virtue.
Allah has commanded us to respect and take care of our parents especially in their old age. This is more than just a suggestion. It is a divine obligation with immeasurable rewards.
Islamic teachings on caring for parents
In the Qur’an, Allah repeatedly reminds us of the importance of treating parents with kindness and respect. One of the most powerful scriptures is these words:
“And We commanded the people to honor their parents. Mothers give birth to their children through many hardships, and it takes two years to wean them. So thank me and your parents. ”
(Surah Luqman 31:14).
This verse emphasizes the sacrifices our parents made for us. It also reminds us of the gratitude we owe to them and ultimately to Allah.
prophet’s guidance
Our beloved Prophet also emphasized the importance of honoring parents. he said:
“Allah’s joy is in the parent’s joy, and Allah’s displeasure is in the parent’s displeasure.”
(Tirmidhi 1899)
In this hadith, the Prophet clearly links our relationship with our parents to our relationship with Allah. If we want to have the joy of Allah, we must first seek the joy of our parents.
