The Election Commission of India released the final electoral roll for the capital on Monday, revealing a slight increase in the number of voters in Delhi. Approximately 1.55 billion people will be eligible to vote in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The pollster’s data also points out that more than 277,000 voters in the capital are over 80 years old.
The Election Commission of India said it had received an “unprecedented number of new registration applications” in the past three weeks. More than 510,000 applications have been submitted since December 16th. Efforts are underway to vet voter registration applications to ensure their authenticity.
“This unprecedented upward trend in Form-6 and 20 days after the scheduled last date for reception of complaints and appeals under SSR-2025 (November 28, 2024) is unexpected and more This needs to be scrutinized,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, sources told PTI that the sudden rush was due to Mahila Samman Yojana announced by AAP. The ruling party recently promised to provide a monthly assistance of Rs 2,100 to registered women voters in Delhi.
According to the final electoral roll released by the poll body on Monday, there are 15,524,858 voters in Delhi. This includes 8,349,645 male electors, 71,73,952 female electors and 1,261 third gender voters. According to the final results, there are 24,44,320 senior citizens voters in Delhi, of whom 2,77,221 are above 80 years of age.
AAP, which won 62 out of 70 seats in the last parliamentary elections, is currently seeking a third term in power. It faces a strong challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party, which won eight seats in the 2020 polls. The Congress, on the other hand, has performed poorly in the last two assembly polls and has not won a single seat despite retaining Delhi for 15 consecutive years.
The Election Commission is yet to announce the dates for the Delhi Assembly elections.
